Is the RAV4 the best option, maybe, depending on what you're looking for in an SUV? It's a fantastic all-around vehicle that does everything well. The fuel economy is fantastic for a N/A four-cylinder engine and the hybrid fuel economy is outstanding. The "floaty" ride isn't really there anymore, and the car has a nice buttoned-down feel. The driving dynamics are greatly improved over previous RAV4 models. The TNGA platform is much stiffer than the outgoing platform, and that translates to a much better "screwed together" feeling. While this is still no sports SUV, it doesn't handle badly at all for what it is. Toyota's New Global Architecture gives the vehicle a lower center of gravity and that in turn gives better handling and driving dynamics. Like most new Toyota models, the RAV4 rides on the TNGA platform. The TRD model features a torque-vectoring AWD system, which is the ultimate system for AWD. The hybrid features an AWD-E system, where there's no mechanical link between the engine and rear axle the rear axle is driven by an electric motor. ![]() The pure gasoline engine features a mechanical AWD system with a differential and driveshaft.
